2006 Proposal During RideMark and Katrina Kasten
After riding Friends of the Parks' L.A.T.E. Ride a few times, Mark Kasten convinced Katrina Sopkovich to join him on the 25-mile ride with 8,000 of their closest friends. The catch for her... the ride started at 1:30 a.m. (waaaaay past Katrina's bedtime, according to Mark!)
Unbeknownst to Katrina, Mark had, weeks earlier, picked the bike ride as the special occasion during which he would propose. During that time, Mark secretly talked to his friends, family and Katrina's family about his plans to surprise her the morning of July 16, 2006. To make a long story short, in typical Katrina fashion, she made lots of unpredictable moves, forcing Mark to use "Plan C".
At the end of the ride, Mark and Katrina rode over to the embankment next to the Shedd Aquarium overlooking Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. He suggested they watch the sunrise and have a little breakfast. While on her back, letting sleep ooze over her (yes, she actually managed to stay upright on her bike for the entire night, says Mark), he popped the question! And,"yes" was the answer. :)
Mark and Katrina are tying the knot on June 2, 2007. They look forward to making the ride an annual event!
